Per-seat pricing hides the real bill. Slack Pro's $8.75/seat sounds small until you multiply: a 10-person team pays $87.50 every month, $1,050 a year — mostly for message history you could own outright. Our comparisons always multiply seats out, so you see team costs, not teaser rates.

The open-source escape routes

Zulip Cloud Standard runs $8/user (or $6.67 annual) — but its self-hosted Basic is $3.50/user and the community edition is free. Rocket.Chat's Starter tier is free for small teams. Mattermost's Entry edition is free to evaluate and built for self-hosting. If your team has anyone comfortable running a server, the entire Slack bill is optional.

Pumble is the budget cloud option nobody talks about: $2.49/seat/month billed annually — a 10-person team pays $24.90 instead of Slack's $87.50, with SSO arriving at $6.99. The capability matrix on each comparison page shows exactly what you give up (usually: app-ecosystem depth).

When Slack is actually fine

Slack's free tier covers a 10-person team's basics — 90-day history, ten apps. Our own comparison page says so in a green box: if you're not hitting those walls, don't switch, downgrade. The switch only pays when you need history and admin controls, and that's exactly where the open-source options undercut hardest.
